After obtaining qualifications in Graphic Design, Photography and Drama, Marcel lectured art and design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Ruth Prowse School of Art. He was also subject head (Art) at JG Meiring High School in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs for three years. This was followed by three years of teaching Design, Art, Technology and Drama at the prestigious Reddam House College in Constantia.

‘design by marcel’ started in his third year of studying design to help pay for his studies. The business has grown at such a rate that Marcel decided to leave a career in Design Education to pursue ‘design by marcel’ full-time.

Marcel’s passion for floral art was prompted by his grandmother Dorothy, a passionate flower gardener. Seeing grandmother Tina using fruit and other organic material in floral arrangements also sparked interest at a young age. His mother, Lidia, has always taught Marcel to look for beauty in art and nature
